When Microsoft Game Pass initially launched in June 2017, it started as Xbox's subscription service that offered hundreds of games for one monthly fee. Since 2020, Game Pass has partnered with major JRPG developers like Atlus, Sega, Square Enix, and Bandai Namco, significantly increasing the Game Pass JRPG library. Game Pass JRPGs include modern Atlus social-sim Persona masterpieces like Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Yakuza JRPGs such as Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Square Enix HD-2D games in the anthology series Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II. All of these games were available through day-one or post-launch Game Pass distribution, and subscribers are able to play these leading JRPG titles without having to buy each game individually. This ranking compiles the ten Game Pass JRPGs that modernize the subscription's modern JRPG library and spans across modern Yakuza JRPGs and Atlus masterpieces to indie pixel-art tributes and HD-2D anthology releases. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

This ranking has three criteria. The game has to be offered on Microsoft Game Pass, meaning it has to be included on Xbox Game Pass for console subscribers or PC Game Pass for desktop subscribers, or both via Game Pass Ultimate. Games that have been rotated off the service don’t get included. Even if a game was originally released before 2026, its mechanics still need to hold up to the standards of the time. The game's cultural impact must have gone beyond audiences that play Game Pass and it must have been discussed in other JRPG circles. Sustained community engagement confirms the lasting impact of each game.

Persona 5 Royal is ranked first because 2022 Game Pass users could access the first modern social sim game by Atlus without the per title purchases. This gave the Persona franchise its biggest cross-platform reach. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is ranked second because it also has first-day Game Pass access which means subscribers can get Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's latest Yakuza JRPG as soon as it comes out. Persona 3 Reload is third because it is also first-day Game Pass access which means subscribers can get the modern remake of Persona 3 which is a foundational Persona game.

Game Pass JRPG includes the modern Persona titles from Atlus Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Yakuza: Like a Dragon from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the HD-2D games from Square Enix which are Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II Sea of Stars from Sabotage Studio, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes from Rabbit & Bear Studios, Tales of Arise from Bandai Namco, and NieR: Automata Become as Gods Edition from PlatinumGames. Day-one Game Pass releases like Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, and Sea of Stars have greatly improved access to the JRPGs. For access to the JRPGs over the various platforms, check out our Ultimate JRPG Guide. For JRPG subscribers to Game Pass in 2026, the following games will be a great starting point.

Criteria for Evaluating the Best JRPGs on Game Pass

Editors have created a method that looks at the different strengths that the subscription service offers for the genre by measuring its Game Pass JRPG entries in three categories. The value-add filter focuses first on the timing of the Game Pass distribution. Persona 5 Royal takes the top spot because its 2022 Xbox Game Pass distribution offered subscribers access to Atlus’s social-sim masterpiece two years after the original PS4-enhanced edition in 2019. Because of this, Persona 5 Royal is positioned to secure Contender status. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is granted Contender status as well because subscribers are able to quickly gain access to the modern sequel in the Yakuza JRPG franchise when the 2024 Game Pass distribution occurs on launch day. When paired with day one access to Reload, the 2024 Game Pass distribution also allows Persona 3 Reload to be Contender status.

The second metric is Modern Xbox availability and Game Pass Ultimate cross-platform accessibility. The Game Pass Ultimate subscription provides access to both Xbox Game Pass for console and PC Game Pass for desktop, plus Cloud Gaming streaming for mobile and tablet. Out of all the titles available on Game Pass, Persona 5 Royal’s reach is the widest. Because of this, Persona 5 Royal enables subscribers to enjoy a 100+ hour campaign of the Phantom Thieves on whichever device they choose, thanks to cloud save synchronization. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth provides the same level of cross-platform accessibility via Game Pass Ultimate as well, whereby players are able to access the dual-protagonist campaign of Ichiban and Kiryu on Xbox, PC, and Cloud streaming.

The Edition of NieR: Automata Become As Gods is now available on Game Pass, so you can experience the action-RPG combat by PlatinumGames and the philosophically intriguing multi-route narrative that can't be experienced in single-route playthroughs.

The depth in the mechanics and the gameplay scope of each title have been reassessed to reflect modern playability standards in 2026, which is why each title has been repositioned considering the most recent 2026 standards. Even games published long ago that have withstood the test of time due to their gameplay mechanics have ranked highly. On day one Game Pass access, Octopath Traveler II offers HD-2D with an eight-protagonist anthology narrative. Yakuza: Like a Dragon offers Game Pass subscribers a reinvention of the series’ turn-based combat, set in the pre-Infinite-Wealth saga of Ichiban Kasuga. Sea of Stars, available as a day one Game Pass title, is an homage to the acclaimed indie game Chrono Trigger and has pixel art from Sabotage Studio. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes by Rabbit & Bear Studios is a spiritual successor to Suikoden and reintroduces the 100-character recruitment system that modern JRPGs have desperately needed since the Suikoden franchise ended. All of these titles available on Game Pass provide a wide spectrum of the contemporary design of the JRPG genre without the need to buy each title individually.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is claimed 10th place due to Rabbit & Bear Studios and 505 Games releasing it as a day one Game Pass title for Game Pass subscribers. As such, they get a Suikoden spiritual successor for free! The main character, Nowa, is a recruit as part of The New Nevaeh Resistance, trying to overthrow the Galdean Empire. This game aims to capture the essence of Suikoden games by including a hundred-character recruitment mechanic as homage to the franchise. Development lead, Yoshitaka Murayama, worked to recruit former Suikoden staff members including character designer, Junko Kawano, and composer, Michiko Naruke, to help make this game a spiritual successor.

Because of the Game Pass Day 1 distribution of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, players immediately had access to the game without having to make a per-title purchase as they would with the franchise's Kickstarter funding model. The game features turn-based combat which employs an Active Combat Skill system. This allows players to utilize different combat skills for each recruited member. Along with this, it also features a Hero Combo system where players can execute multi-character combos during tough battles. The game contains more than 60 hours of gameplay set during the New Nevaeh Resistance war and provides fans with a much-anticipated modern spiritual successor to the series. Additionally, the game features a Castle Town mechanic which is also a part of the Suikoden franchise. Nintendo Switch Online, Cloud Gaming, and Game Pass subscribers will also enjoy the classic-style JRPG genre and modern Suikoden games. Thanks to the unique HD-2D design used by Square Enix and Acquire (in the RPG pixel-style graphics mixed with 3D designs), the first game in the franchise to hit Xbox platforms and the Game Pass service, we get to consider Octopath Traveler one of the most noteworthy titles of 2018. From the eight protagonists of the game, we get to choose from Olberic the warrior, Therion the thief, Cyrus the scholar, Ophilia the cleric, Primrose the dancer, Alfyn the apothecary, Tressa the merchant, and H'aanit the hunter. The storyline of each protagonist has four chapters and only lightly intertwines with all of the others to cover the storyline involving danger in the continent of Orsterra. Another interesting element to the combat system is called Boost Points, which allows for the players to make tactical decisions by collecting these Boost Points throughout the fights, and save them to make stronger attacks at the combat 'encounter' situations.

As a direct result of Game Pass, subscribers gained the ability to experience the origin of the franchise before playing the sequel that was released in 2023 and entitled Octopath Traveler II this time with some refinements to the anthological system. Subscribers were able to explore the evolution of the HD-2D design over the years from the 2018 game to the 2023 game with both editions included in the Game Pass. Each one of the eight protagonists has 4-5 hours of gameplay in JRPG role-play video game) format, which can be done independently through each chapter of their story. In addition to that, there are optional side quests available to players that can link party members together to cross story arcs with other protagonists in their quest. As the very first game to use the HD-2D anthology design system for JRPGs, Game Pass subscribers are encouraged to play this title before it’s sequels. With Tales of Arise being the eighth title on our list, we take a look at Bandai Namco's 2021 release that brought the franchise's modern peak to Game Pass via the Xbox port distribution. The protagonist Alphen, is an Iron Mask amnesia survivor on the planet Dahna, which is currently under Renan Empire occupation. His partner, Shionne, is a Renan who joins the resistance along with Rinwell, Law, Kisara, and Dohalim. The franchise's battle system gets even more enhancements as the Boost Strike combo system promotes combat synergy attacks that activate after a sustained amount of pressure to the enemy.

As a Game Pass title, subscribers were able to try out Tales of Arise without needing to purchase the title, something the franchise's traditional console release model typically requires. In the past, the Tales franchise occupied an awkward mid-tier marketing position between mainline Square Enix JRPGs and indie releases. Game Pass distribution helped reposition Tales of Arise towards the wider Xbox audience who otherwise may never engage with Bandai Namco's JRPG releases. The 60-plus-hour story spanning multiple worlds is the franchise's most narratively ambitious work. For this reason, Tales of Arise also remains the franchise's most recommended title for Game Pass users looking for action-command combat along with a substantial campaign length. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Sea of Stars is a Tribute to Indie Games' Chrono Trigger. It is part of Sabotage Studio's 2023 day-one Game Pass releases. Upon Game Pass's launch, subscribers received Sea of Stars and, thus, another of Echo Generation's Indie Games. Sea of Stars features a two-protagonist Solstice Warriors campaign, where Valere the Lunar Monk and Zale the Solar Blade Dancer must defeat the World Eaters using a combined Moon and Sun magic. The game incorporates turn-based combat with a system that requires the player to time their actions to trigger the attack. If timed correctly, their attack will do additional damage and it will lessen the damage received from enemies.

On day-one of Game Pass, Sea of Stars was able to acquire a significant portion of the Xbox gamers, establishing its place as a premier indie title. Game Pass subscribers receive a decent introduction to modern indie JRPGs during the 25-30 hour game. While most indie pixel-art JRPGs games are unremarkable, Sea of Stars is a decent indie JRPG Game Pass title. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Coming in at sixth place is Yakuza: Like a Dragon which is the first Yakuza title to bring a turn-based combat system to Game Pass because of the Xbox port distribution. The main character, Ichiban Kasuga, is an ex-yakuza who works in the Ijincho district of Yokohama, and this campaign marks the Yakuza series transition from action-brawler combat to a turn-based JRPG system which is what all of the subsequent Like a Dragon titles have used. Other campaign party members include Nanba, Adachi, Saeko, Eri, Joon-gi Han and Zhao. The campaign has themes of yakuza succession, the social and ethnic tensions of the Korean and Chinese gangs, and the social underclass of Yokohama. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Subscribers of Game Pass are now able to experience the franchise's latest turn-based reinvention before the Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth sequel set to release in 2024. The Job Class system and Sujimon encounter system, a parody of Pokemon, give each party member their own set of unique combat abilities based on their class, which can be one of Hero, Bodyguard, Idol, Chef, Hostess, or Foreman. Yakuza: Like a Dragon serves as the precedent for turn-based JRPG system the franchise is going with, and for Game Pass subscribers looking to experience the Ichiban Kasuga origin story before the Infinite Wealth sequel, this is the title recommended to them.

You can find Octopath Traveler II here. It is this year's Square Enix and Acquire title that has brought Game Pass subscribers the franchise's HD-2D aesthetic refinement, combined with the Game Pass Day 1 accessibility tier. It also features the original's eight-protagonist anthology format with new characters — warrior Hikari, dancer Agnea, merchant Partitio, scholar Osvald, thief Throne, cleric Temenos, hunter Ochette, and apothecary Castti — all of whom have their own independent four-chapter stories that connect to the Solistia continent threat.

The Game Pass Day 1 availability means subscribers can access Octopath Traveler II without needing to make an individual purchase decision, thus quickly expanding the sequel's reach to Xbox users. Along with the original Boost Point battle system, a new mechanic called Latent Power has been implemented. This allows each protagonist to have a unique, charge meter dependent, one-time-per-encounter ability that can be utilized. To add to the diversity in battle encounters, as well as the overall town and NPC interactions, a day-night cycle system has been implemented. Throne and Partitio's chapters include exclusive exploration powers during nighttime. Cloud Gaming support, as well as Verified compatibility with Steam Deck, allows subscribers to access Octopath Traveler II on PC and mobile, thereby widening the audience reach beyond Xbox console subscribers. For Game Pass subscribers, Octopath Traveler II is the height of HD-2D aesthetics and for players looking for eight-protagonist anthology narratives enriched with Square Enix combat depth, this is the title to select. NieR: Automata Become as Gods Edition is number four of the 2018 releases of philosophical action-RPGs by PlatinumGames and Square Enix. It added the 2017 masterwork to Game Pass subscribers via Xbox's distribution. In the game, the player controls 2B, a YaRHa combat android, and conducts operations on a distant, post-apocalyptic, future Earth where they proxy war against machine lifeforms and android forces for their own forgotten masters. The trademark combat system by PlatinumGames includes real-time action where users can switch between a Type 3 Sword, Type 4O Sword, and Virtuous Treaty, among others, allowing for varied combat style and play.

For Game Pass subscribers, the Become as Gods Edition offers the complete experience of NieR: Automata, including the base game and the 3C3C1D119440927 DLC. Subscribers play the game post-route C, and experience the philosophical revelations that provide the game with its storytelling structure and multi-perspective storytelling. This edition includes an enhanced presentation that improves frame rates and resolution compared to the original Xbox One version. The FPS Boost feature allows 60 FPS across the action-combat encounters. Game Pass subscribers seeking a peak action RPG with combat depth from PlatinumGames and a multi-route narrative depth will find that NieR: Automata Become as Gods Edition is the most philosophically ambitious Game Pass JRPG. It is highly recommended in order to experience action-RPG combat with narrative depth. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

The third spot goes to Persona 3 Reload. Atlus will have a day one Game Pass release for 2024 and this is a remake of a game that was originally released in 2006. Subscribers will get immediate access to the first entry in the series that introduced social-sim elements. Players will take on the role of Makoto Yuki who is exploring a phenomenon known as the Dark Hour which occurs at midnight while he attends Gekkoukan High School. SEES (Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad) members operate from a dormitory home base during the school year. Players will summon a Persona like in previous entries, however this will be a modern and refined presentation. Each playable character will have to use an Evoker, which is a gun that is pointed at the character's head, to summon a Persona as this is a key feature of the game's aesthetic. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Due to Game Pass Day 1, subscribers do not have to deal with Atlus's previous franchise title purchase requirement to access a game. This removes the financial barrier for the Game Pass users and allows them to access the modern remake of Persona 3. Theurgy will provide additional depth to the combat of Persona 3 Reload. This mechanic will allow players to use special ultimate abilities that are gained from participating in repetitive combat. The main area players will advance combat is the randomized dungeon titled Tartarus. This is where players will engage in combat and explore to find new gear, items, and rare Personas throughout the academic year of the campaign. The Social Link system returns from the previous games. Players will gain combat abilities by strengthening their relationships with NPCs and some of these relationships will be emotionally rewarding character arcs which are tied to the development of the SEES party members.

Persona 3 Reload is a good starting point for Game Pass users new to the series, offering an updated experience for 2024 hardware standards.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the second title from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio to be released as a day-one Game Pass title, reaching subscribers for the first time at peak Modern Yakuza JRPG Franchise. The game features a dual perspective story where players control Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu; as they travel to and from Yokohama Japan, and Honolulu Hawaii. The Hawaiian setting includes new traversal methods, combat encounters based around tourism, and additional side quests. Returning from the previous game is the Job-class system, which adds new jobs specific to the Hawaiian location including: Aquanaut, Action Star, Geodancer (presumably a reference to the 90's dance game franchise), and Tour Guide.

Because Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a Game Pass Day 1 title, subscribers can play the game without having to buy the title, which increases the reach of the franchise sequel to Xbox Users and those using PC Game Pass for the first time at the same time. The Dondoko Island side mode of the game is essentially an Animal Crossing style game where Ichiban builds a tourism resort and has to recruit tourists, build facilities, and manage the resort; offering hundreds of hours of optional content. The game also features the return of the Kazuma Kiryu character, and provides the franchise's most narratively significant Kiryu chapter since the 2018 finale of Yakuza 6. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will be a title worth playing for subscribers of Game Pass in 2026, due to the title offering a 100+ hour campaign in addition to peak Modern Yakuza JRPG turn-based combat. Persona 5 Royal gets the number one spot, as it is the first JRPG from ATLAS that is available through Game Pass. It is also the first Xbox release for a Persona game. Players can now access the Persona universe on the Xbox Series and Xbox One, on PC Game Pass, and Cloud Gaming. In this game, players join Phantom Thieves and play as Joker. They will go through different metaverse Palaces located in the Tokyo dungeons. This game is a combination of social simulation, role-playing, and dungeon crawling. Players have to make important decisions that will affect the outcome and the experience of the game. Persona 5 Royal features a new third semester, new character (Kasumi), and a new antagonist (Maruki) whose ideology contradicts the Phantom Thieves.

The Game Pass distribution was the first time followers of the Persona franchise from PlayStation would be able to play [insert any/all previous games in the franchise], and experience the All-Out Attack combat system. This game features an amazing Persona summoning mechanic and allows players to switch between various elemental Personas during combat. The 22 Confidant social links give players access to combat skills, and also includes character arcs that tackle issues such as social injustice, teacher abuse, political corruption, and the cultural pressure in Tokyo that fuels the rebellion of the Phantom Thieves.

The game's soundtrack composed by Lyn Inaizumi, along with the songs "Beneath the Mask," "Last Surprise," "Life Will Change," and "Whims of Fate," received notable acclaim within the franchise.

Since the Game Pass Ultimate platform flexibility allows cloud save access that maintains players' camo saved progress across devices, subscribers can play the Phantom Thieves campaign (100+ hours) on Xbox console, PC Desktop, Cloud Gaming streaming, and of course, win the cross-platform save progress flexibility and Phantom Thieves campaign 100+ hours) play. For the 2022 Game Pass cut, Atlus made its most extensive cross-platform Persona distribution, allowing Royal to become the most easily accessible franchise entry for new users.

Due to having the peak franchise social simulation elements, as well as Game Pass Ultimate cross-platform access and 100+ hours of gameplay, Persona 5 Royal will be the best recommendation for JRPG fans with subscriptions in 2026. Additionally, Royal is the top Game Pass title and the first one that subscribers looking to explore the JRPG tier should play. It showcases the II-atoms broadest access point to JRPGs, a combination of modern AAA titles and extensive bank access. This comprehensive ranking reflects editorial standards in 2026.

Where to Begin and Honorable Mentions

Many Game Pass JRPGs were close to making the top ten list but ultimately were not included. Obsidian Entertainment's Pentiment (2022) is a historical narrative RPG that takes place in a medieval Bavarian monastery and features an investigation spanning three different time periods. Though it may seem like a JRPG, it is much closer to point and click. Another Obsidian Entertainment title, The Outer Worlds (2019), is a first-person action RPG set in a sci-fi universe. Wasteland 3 (2020) from inXile Entertainment is a tactical post-apocalyptic RPG set in Colorado where players will engage in combat against snow mutants. Obsidian Entertainment's Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire (2018) is a modern successor to Infinity Engine that has been added to Game Pass, allowing players access to the Deadfire archipelago. State of Decay 2 by Undead Labs offers players an RPG survival game with base building features through Microsoft's Day One Game Pass. For more information on the contemporary lineup of JRPGs across consoles, check out our Ultimate JRPG Guide.

In 2026, Game Pass JRPGs will have a definitive title that will allow players to delve into modern Atlus social simulations — Persona 5 Royal. If you are looking for the peak modern Yakuza JRPG, you will want to play Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. It will be released on Game Pass on launch day. Franchise newcomers to Persona will want to play Persona 3 Reload as it is the modern remake of the title and offers an introduction to the social simulation that is foundational to the series.

NieR: Automata Become as Gods Edition brings a masterwork of philosophical action RPGs to Game Pass as subscribers looking for depth in PlatinumGames combat can experience it. The Game Pass day-one offerings also bring Octopath Traveler II and Sea of Stars, which represent the highs of modern HD-2D and indie pixel-art, respectively.
