Syrian authorities arrest alleged crime cell in Idlib

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Monday that security authorities had arrested a five-member cell in the city of Harem in Idlib governorate on charges including drug trafficking, distributing counterfeit currency, and carrying out thefts.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the Criminal Investigation Department of the Internal Security Directorate in Harem conducted the operation following what it described as extensive surveillance and close monitoring of the suspects’ activities.

The ministry said investigations found that the group was involved in promoting counterfeit currency, trafficking narcotics, and carrying out a number of thefts.

It added that further inquiries linked the suspects to a series of thefts targeting both public and private property. During initial investigations, the detainees were confronted with evidence, after which they allegedly confessed to the charges against them, according to the ministry.

The Internal Security Directorate said the suspects had been referred to the competent judicial authorities to complete legal proceedings and face penalties in accordance with Syrian law.
