When I first created AutoMapIt in 2005, I was swamped with domains that required regular updates of some massive sitemaps for many of my own websites and many more of my clients websites. The software at the time (only 2-3 sitemap tools existed back then) wasn't helping to manage all of the domains I was updating and some of the tools crashed my computer or bogged down my clients servers. It was then that I knew there had to be a better way, so I created the first version of AutoMapIt Sitemap Service.
The first version was limited in features, but it finally took the load off of my computer and my clients servers. I was able to enter all of the domains where I was using sitemaps and the system automatically updated all of them. Once the domains were setup, I didn't have to concern myself with the sitemaps again. I could concentrate on handling the other parts of the SEO formula!
Right away after my first version was publicly released I realized that if I was grabbing webpages to look for links to be used in a sitemap, I could also check those pages to be sure they weren't violating Webmaster Guidelines and many other factors that affect a pages chances of ranking well. AutoMapIt began reporting on various things that affect a pages ability to rank such as broken links, redirects, really bad HTML code (not just the borderline 'fluff' that most tools report). I was able to analyze keywords on pages, and I extended this to include a very special report on the site-wide keyword usage... what does your entire website have to say about itself?
It concerned me that Google might have an issue with my automated notifications, even though they list their URL for these notifications on their website. I built in several controls to check for the Sitemap Protocol rules to ensure that when I ping Google, they will find a valid and acceptable sitemap at the URL sent to them. I prevent repeat notifications (ping spam) for 24 hours. After many years, no search engine has ever taken issue with automatic notifications from this sitemap service.
AutoMapIt has gone through many other evolutions in code and features, but it has remained my goal to help webmasters and entrepreneurs to succeed and improve their online success.
