Linking Global HIV/AIDS Treatments with National Programs for the Control and Elimination of the Neglected Tropical Diseases

Emerging evidence provides a scientific rationale for combining treatment programs for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) with programs for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Engaging the major stakeholders to establish operational links between HIV/AIDS and NTD control and elimination activities, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, could increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of both HIV/AIDS and NTD efforts.

The struggle of neglected research groups: ten years of NeTropica efforts to promote research in tropical diseases in Central America

Chaves-Olarte and colleagues argue that the development of “vibrant local scientific communities” is necessary to address the challenge of tropical diseases in low and middle income countries (LMIC). The authors describe ten years of activities of the Network for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases in Central America (NeTropica) which aim to develop a competitive Central American scientific community in the field of tropical diseases in cooperation with the Swedish International Developing Agency.

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) mediated siRNA gene silencing in the Schistosoma mansoni snail host, Biomphalaria glabrata

Freshwater snails are important in the transmission of schistosomiasis. One method of schistosomiasis control is to interrupt the transmission of the schistosome parasite during the intra-molluscan phase of its development. Gene-silencing technology involving the use of dsRNA have used an injection route to disrupt gene translation in the Schistosoma mansoni snail host in an effort to investigate how inhibition of various transcripts can affect the dynamics of the snail/parasite interaction. However, the injection method previously utilized is impractical, especially when working with juvenile snails. Knight and colleagues describe their work to improve on the injection method with the goal of making the use of gene silencing technology more widely applicable to functional gene studies in snails.

 

A Screen against Leishmania Intracellular Amastigotes: Comparison to a Promastigote Screen and Identification of a Host Cell-Specific Hit

Drugs currently available to treat leishmaniasis are toxic to the patient and drug-resistant parasites are emerging. Fortunately, interest in confronting the treatment challenges has grown and new technology has led to an increase in high-throughput screens conducted against Leishmania. In order to gain insight into the most efficient screening strategy, De Muylder and colleagues compared two methods, one targeting the easily cultured insect-infective promastigote stage of the parasite, and the other, targeting the clinically relevant but more difficult to culture intracellular amastigote stage.
