NEW • Distribution Release: Slax 7.0.6 |
Tomáš Matějíček has announced the release of Slax 7.0.6, an updated version of the Slackware-based live CD with a minimalist KDE desktop: "I'd like to announce an update of Slax live Linux, version 7.0.6. The main changes are the new Linux kernel 3.8.2 and updated KDE 4.10.1. It was a bit harder than I expected, mostly due to some really odd changes made by KDE developers, which I had to work around to get the same functionality as we are used to. Raw changelog: fixed missing notification when module is activated or deactivated; upgraded all packages to reflect changes in Slackware 'Current'; Updated Firefox to 19.0.2; show date on taskbar under current time; the device notifier in KDE is now hidden since it was showing on mad positions. The Slax size has increased by about 3 MB due to new stuff provided by KDE." Read the full release announcement for more information. Download: slax-English-US-7.0.6-x86_64.iso (226MB, MD5). Update: a bug-fix version 7.0.7 is now available. And 7.0.8. |

Distribution Release: Puppy Linux 5.5 "Precise" |
Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.5 "Precise" edition, a small distribution built from and compatible with Ubuntu 12.04.2 binary packages: "Well, time marches on and Ubuntu have released their second build of 'Precise Pangolin', 12.04.2. Precise Puppy 5.5 is built from 12.04.2 DEBs, but of course it is extremely important to understand with Puppy Linux that our use of the binary packages of another distro is only a convenience for us, to obtain binary compatibility, hence compatibility with that distro's package repositories -- in all other respects, from the lowest levels of the infrastructure upward, Puppy is unique. There have been many bug fixes and improvements at the Woof level since Precise 5.4.3 was released, plus many package fixes and upgrades. Enough to warrant the number jump to 5.5." See the release announcement and release notes for additional details. Download the live CD image from ibiblio.org: precise-5.5.iso (168MB, MD5). |

Development Release: Pentoo 2013.0 RC1.1 |
Richard Farina has announced the availability of the first release candidate for Pentoo 2013.0, a Gentoo-based live DVD with a collection of penetration testing and forensic analysis tools: "Pentoo 2013.0 RC1. Jam-packed with 3.7.5 Linux kernel (PAX-hardened for 64-bit users) and built with a fully hardened toolchain (did someone say Wireshark exploit?). Time may have been passing, but we here at Pentoo have been anything but idle (you can check the SVN history). As usual, we have the latest tools and toys for all the good little pen testers. I simply couldn't list them all if I tried, so I'm not going to try. Everything has its usual amount of spit and polish on it, except the layers seem to be building up. This release comes with a shiny new installer with 200% more works! Automatic and manual modes for normal partitioning and booting now work properly, and the installer is very fast (you know, as fast as we can copy all that data to your hard drive)."
